Embraer’s KC-390 twinjet made its Paris Air Show debut this week with the second prototype flying in the flight test program. Development is far along, and the company gave AIN the chance to experience the aircraft in flight over the French countryside. The aircraft has been designed to tackle a variety of mission types, thanks to its large cargo hold and ramp. And military forces around the world will appreciate the KC-390’s ability to operate from unimproved and short airfields. The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is a large military transport aircraft built by Lockheed. It provides the United States Air Force (USAF) with a heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability, one that can carry outsize and oversize cargos, including all air-certifiable cargo. The Galaxy has many similarities to its smaller C-141 Starlifter predecessor, and the later C-17 Globemaster. The C-5 is among the largest military aircraft in the world. The C-5 Galaxy had a complicated development; significant cost overruns were experienced and Lockheed suffered significant financial difficulties. Shortly after entering service, fractures in the wings of many aircraft were discovered and the C-5 fleet were restricted in capability until corrective work was conducted. The C-5M Super Galaxy is an ...
China's first domestically developed heavy-lift transport jet Y-20 conducted its third flying show at the ongoing 2016 China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, or Air Show China in Zhuhai of south China's Guangdong Province on Thursday. Y-20, with a capacity load of 66 tons and a maximum voyage of 7,800 kilometers, can take off in a minimum of 600 to 700 meters. Y-20 made its debut flight in 2013 and was first exhibited at the Air Show China in 2014. This year two Y-20 attended the air show in Zhuhai. One is for static exhibition, and the other is for flying show. The Y-20 was officially delivered to the China Air Force in July. Now in its 20th year, the biennial air show is held in the coastal city of Zhuhai from Nov 1 to 6, attracting more than 700 exhibitors from...

A rare view of an Embraer KC-390 military jet transport aircraft taking off from Farnborough, England. This Embraer KC-390, PT-ZNF, is the first prototype and flew out of Farnborough at the start of the public air show days in 2016. It is in the camouflage and marking of the Força Aérea Brasileira (the Brazilian Air Force). It did not display for the UK public at the air show.

New supersonic passenger jet with sonic boom suppression technology.
Airbus have filed a patent for a supersonic aircraft that could travel from London to New York in an hour. Travelling at speeds of up to Mach 4.5 (four-and-a-half times the speed of sound), a trip from Paris to San Francisco could be completed in three hours. Our Science Correspondent Alok Jha reports. The return of supersonic passenger travel is one step closer to reality with NASA's award of a contract for the preliminary design of a low boom flight demonstrator aircraft. This is the first in a series of X-planes in NASA's New Aviation Horizons initiative, introduced in the agency’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget.
The German-built Dornier Do 31 first flew in February 1967 and it remains the first, and only, jet-powered vertical lift and take-off transport aircraft. The experimental aircraft was nicknamed the 'Fire Breathing Dragon' after a spectacular attempt at a first flight. The Do 31's huge weight, owing to its lift fans, meant it was inefficient compared with conventional transport aircraft. It was cancelled in 1970. To this day it still holds six international aviation records.

FANTASSY - Future Aircraft design following the carrier-pod concept as an eNabler for co-modal seamless Transport, pAssenger Safety and environmental SustainabilitY. FANTASSY is a project executed within the European 7th RTD Framework Programme (2012-2014). Background One of the most challenging areas of aeronautical research is the air-vehicle itself, mainly in what concerns its form and operation. Passenger aircrafts have kept more or less the same basic design since the 40's. Several improvements have been introduced since then (composite materials for the main load bearing structure of the aircraft e.g. A350, B787) but none of them had altered the basic form of the aircraft or its main operation and handling. Objectives For the air-transport of the future, several pioneering ideas m...
